Georgia Football: Alistair’s three Favorite UGA victories.
2012: no. 10 Georgia beats no. 2 Florida 17-9
in 2012, the Florida Gators were one of the favourites for the national championship. Urban Meyer had departed, but Will Muschamp at that point had added to his strong squad. They defeated #4 ranked LSU, #9 ranked South Carolina and then it was time for their annual match against the Bulldogs. Of course, this was a match Mark Richt had forever struggled in. Both Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer had UGA’s number for years. What chance could Georgia have against such a juggernaut?
Five days before the game, UGA Safety Shawn Williams ripped his fellow defensive players in the media for being too soft. Boy did they respond during this game. They stuffed a Florida offense that had scored 44 points the week before against SC and totally shut them down. It was a masterpiece of defensive football that was led by 6 Georgia turnovers. Jarvis Jones was an absolute monster as per usual as UGA forced 4 fumbles and 2 interceptions.
Aaron Murray had a tough game, throwing for 3 picks himself but it didn’t matter. The UGA defense had taken over and they were not giving this game away. Florida would not lose another game all season. This win was the tiebreaker that took UGA to Athens that year where the heartbreak against Alabama would happen. This win essentially ended their chance for silverwear that season. Nothing better then that.
