Georgia Football: Play of the game Week 1
By Mike Stowe
The Play of the Game:
It came at the 6.41-minute mark in the first quarter, and it was absolutely shocking. Sophomore starting quarterback Jacob Eason was still trying to find his groove in the passing game. It was 2nd and 15 so a pass play was called. Eason couldn’t find an open target so he rolled out to his right with a couple of Mountaineer defenders in pursuit. As he scrambled awkwardly out-of-bounds, Appalachian State defensive end Myquon Stout gave Eason a little late push. It resulted in a late hit 15 yard penalty. Eason tried to get back up and continue but was in obvious pain. He had hurt his knee and would soon make his way to the locker room. His day was over.
This was pretty much exactly what UGA fans did not want to see. Their starting QB injured before the first quarter ended. To make matters worse, it happened so early that ESPN hadn’t even switched over to the game. Thanks to a late running South Carolina game, some of us had the game suddenly switch on only to find Fromm in the gae.
As the UGA medical staff tended to Eason, backup quarterback Jake Fromm was handed the ball and went on to have a pretty good game. UGA special teams coordinator Shane Beemer looked at Fromm and smiled as he took the field to lead the offense. “Have some fun”, he said. Fromm did just that. The star freshman definitely made some questionable throws. He looked down some receivers at times. But he looked extremely poised considering the circumstances.
