Georgia Football lost a good prospect in Chauncey Manac a few weeks ago, but the rise of Walter Grant shows why he choose to transfer.

When Chauncey Manac decided to transfer away from Georgia a few weeks ago, there was some confusion among fans. Manac was expected to be a backup OLB this season after impressing in practice last season. However, from the moment summer camp started, he found himself trying to earn time at DE as well as OLB. After the first two games of the season, his decision to move on makes quite a bit of sense.

Freshman Walter Grant has shown to be quite the player to start this season. With Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy heading up that position this season, Grant will only play in spots. However, he has found a way onto the field when they rest and he has made an impact. He flashed in the first games against App State and then made a big play to stop QB Brandon Wimbush last weekend:

It’s a credit to him that a player so young is able to recognize a play so well. Kirby Smart has said a few times that Grant has really impressive football intelligence. That combined with clear physical ability is a reason all Georgia fans should be excited about him. He looks like someone who should continue to have a big impact at UGA going forward.

Throw in D’Andre Walker and Robert Beal and the current crop of linebackers looks good. Beal has a crazy amount of talent and hopefully, we’ll get to see him out on the field this weekend vs Samford. Add in some really talented prospects coming in the next class and opposition clubs had better get used to ‘the Wolfpack’. It looks like they could be hunting QB’s for quite some time.

Tyler Clark could be the next great UGA DT.

It’s not just the OLB’s that have great depth this year. The D-line has been dominant and that has in part been due to a stacked depth chart. Mel Tucker has been able to keep his linemen fresh because he has been able to rotate them so much. Despite doing this, the quality of play has barely dipped and that has been because the younger players have been playing well.

Tyler Clark is someone who has really stood out. While he might have been a 4-star player, he was not considered to be a future star. Fellow sophomore Julian Rochester was expected to be the next great UGA DT and he’s impressed. Clark, however, has looked better. He looked good as a freshman but this year, his play has really stood out.

In that video above, he just destroys Alex Bars. Bars is a 5th year senior that some think could end up being a late round draft pick. He’s a tough beat. The fact that Clark did it so well shows his growth. It’s also a sign that even when Trenton Thompson leaves, this line is going to continue to stay strong.

This year’s Georgia defense looks special. One of the biggest reasons for that is the depth that Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker have built in that front 7. While there is a good chance that a lot of that talent is going to go pro after this season, that depth should mean that 2018 this unit remains strong. If the coaches can keep recruiting like they have been, except that strength to continue going forward.
