As Georgia Football gets ready for their big game this weekend, Mike Stowe delves into what makes our rival fans tick for this particular game.

Georgia Football is looking great right now. Every one of the 9 wins they’ve compiled so far in this historic season have been a joy to watch. Now comes true crunch time. Are we for real? I believe that question has already been answered. But can we handle success? That question will be answered this Saturday when the Dawgs travel to the Plains of Auburn to face the 3rd of what I consider “the big 4” rivals. Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, and Tech.

If you can have a season at UGA with victories over those 4, it’s been a great year. As we prepare for the upcoming war at Auburn, which I think will be just as tough as the Notre Dame road game, I want to take a look at a fascinating creature. A creature that is delusional, cocky and obnoxious like no other. I’m talking about the Auburn fan. If you know some or have even simply dealt with them online, you know what I’m talking about. I’ve got a couple in particular that I talk smack with online in our FB sports group, Sports Trash Talk Central. Barners like Nick Ross and Steve Saucer are a dime a dozen, but they are fascinating nonetheless.

These dudes think Auburn is great.

I’m not talking about just good. They think Auburn is GREAT. Every year. Every year they think Auburn is going to beat Georgia in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. For the last few years, they have been wrong. Every year, they think Auburn is going to beat Bama in the Iron Bowl. That’s certainly not been the case for a while. Every year, they think these preseason hype machines like Jeremy Johnson and Jarrett Stidham are going to win or at least compete for the Heisman. It’s been 7 years since Cam Newton.

It’s so hilarious to me. And it happens every single year. They’re living off of the memories of Cam Newton, Gus Malzahn’s first year, and the kick 6. Are they good this year? Yeah, they’re good. But they’re not great. They lost to an LSU team that lost to Troy at home. Over the last 4 years, they are 1-7 against top 10 opponents under Malzahn. There’re 0-6 against Georgia and Alabama over the last 3 years. They don’t want to hear that, though. They want to tell us Dawg fans how horrible those of us that wanted to move on from Coach Richt after 15 years were, while they fired Gene Chizik within 2 years of him winning a national title. Hypocritical much?

These people spend much of their days on social media, bragging about how they’re so much better than a team that has beaten them 9 out of the past 11 years. There has always been a willful arrogance to a lot of Auburn fans. They’ve somehow maintained that despite the fact that they have been a mediocre team the past 3 years. Since his first season, Malzahn has yet to break the 8 win mark. Yet still, they crow.

Their team name is the Tigers.

So their fans yell “War Eagle”! as a bird soars over their stadium. They have to be the only team in America who decided that one mascot isn’t enough. It’s as if they believe that having 2 alpha predators as mascots makes them a better team. This all while also being known as “Plainsmen”. Something isn’t quite right there.

Auburn is ranked #10 in the nation right now. They have a legit defense along with a quarterback in Jarrett Stidham that can air it out and give UGA fits downfield. Kerryon Johnson is currently leading the SEC in rushing. This game is at their place and this will be a tough task for the #1 rated Georgia Bulldogs. It may be the toughest game so far this season. Auburn fans are beating their chests and are very confident this week, but this is a game that the Dawgs can win. Jake Fromm will be asked to do more in the passing game due to their strong defensive front selling out against our run. Is he up to the task? I believe so. I’m not 100% convinced that they can shut down the 5 headed monster that is Georgia’s running game for all 4 quarters anyway.

A victory Saturday will absolutely solidify the Dawgs as the number 1 team in the nation. And in the process, it can take the steam out of that all too real but strange and unexplainable creature known as the “Auburn fan.” They’ll still spew their verbal garbage about how great Cam Newton was and how Gus Malzahn transformed Nick Marshall from a DB to an SEC championship-winning QB, but at least for a week or 2, they’ll be forced to tone it down a little and be humble. Go sic em, shut em down, and shut em up, Dawgs.

Auburn and Georgia kick off at 3:30 on Saturday. The game will be televised on CBS.
