There are a lot of on the field reasons that Georgia Football fans will miss Sony Michel, but his heartfelt letter to the Players Tribune means just as much to Dawgnation.

Sony Michel has never been the kind of guy who was going to quietly head off to the NFL. For years, we’ve heard the stories about the type of leader he’s been for this Georgia Football team. He’s always been more than ‘just a running back’ to this team.

So it’s probably not surprising that Michel penned a heartfelt goodbye to Athens today for The Players Tribune. For those of you who haven’t read it, I urge you to take 5 minutes of your day and click on the link. I can’t recommend doing it in public because it’s the kind of thing that is likely going to make you cry, but everyone in Dawgnation should read it.

It’s the kind of article that should help remind all of us fans just how lucky we have been these past few years. Not only to have Sony and Nick Chubb stay for 4 years but also to have players with this kind of character represent our school and lay the foundation for the future.

DeAndre Swift, Zamir White and James Cook are all ready to step in and take on the load as running backs. But Michel really did set the template for a selfless player who would do anything for his teammates and his school. He’s so thankful to the UGA community for supporting him, but the more I think about it, the more I think that it’s us who should be thankful.

So thank you Sony for everything you did during your 4 years at the University of Georgia. Thank you for being a humble player who led by example and helped establish a new standard at the school all of us love. Thank you for a Rose Bowl that will forever be remembered by the entire of Dawgnation.

You led us back to the promised land and even though we didn’t quite get that final win, when we do, you can know that your hard work was a part of it. This Georgia team will go into next season believing that a long-awaited Championship is attainable. You did that. You set those standards and I for one will never forget it.

Next: Ok, no more tears... Let's look at some linebackers shall we?

Wherever the NFL draft sends Michel, it’s safe to say that Dawgnation will be cheering him on for the entirety of his professional career. We should do. Players like this don’t come along all that often and that makes the moments you get from them all the more special.
