The DeAngelo Gibbs question:

Before we dive into anything else, we need to figure out if the Dawgs will still have one of their most talented recruits form the 2017 class. DeAngelo Gibbs was one of the highest ranked players that UGA signed in 2017. Already 6-2 and 210lbs, he looked ready to step in and play right away. That’s something he did, seeing the field several time early on in garbage time at the star position.

But something happened as the year went on. Gibbs didn’t even travel with the team after the Florida game and didn’t see the field again. After the season he had surgery and was dealing with a shoulder injury, but he wasn’t enrolled in classes in the spring. That meant that he missed all of spring camp as well as G-day.

Gibbs returned to school and enrolled in classes this summer, but he is yet to return with the team. Some reporters have suggested that he’s just enrolled so that he can transfer. Others expect him to be back playing or Georgia later this summer.

Until we know, it’s hard to figure out whats going to happen at nickel back. Gibbs was a great fit there and looked really impressive early on. If he returns and is healthy, he’d probably be the favorite for the job.

But we’re going to be in ‘wait and see’ mode for a while. Ideally, you’d want Gibbs back. He’s a tremendous talent who looked like a potential stud with an NFL future early on. Ultimately though, this one is out of the coaches hands and depends on Gibbs himself. Does he want to compete for his position and go through the grind of being on a Kirby Smart type team? We should know when camp gets here.
