Mark Webb becomes even more important:

The loss of Joseph, Divaad Wilson (knee injury) and potential Gibbs puts even more pressure on Mark Webb. He switched positions last season, moving from WR to cornerback and apparently impressed the staff. He was holding down the CB spot across from Deandre Baker for much of spring camp. However a meniscus tear ruled him out of G-day and forced him to have surgery.

Webb is on the mend and is expected to be back for summer camp but he’s become all the more vital. The Dawgs might be down three defensive backs that they hoped to have. Last year they were so thin there, they moved Webb over to defense. Now they may well need him to step up and start.

In all honesty, Webb deserves a lot of credit. He played himself into this position. Kirby Smart and Mel Tucker have spoken very highly of him and he’s beaten out some tough competition s far. Now that is about to get even more difficult with some very talented young CB’s arriving in town.

But while the likes of Tyson Campbell and Chris Smith will push him, UGA needs Webb to be good. Deandre Baker is pretty much the definition of a shutdown corner in the SEC. He didn’t allow a single TD pass last year which means teams will throw elsewhere. Webb has the size and the system knowledge to hold up and stop opposing teams WR’s. If he’s as good as we’ve been hearing in camp, it could mean a big step up for UGA’s secondary play in 2018.
