What to Expect in Athens

Plumlee is exactly the type of player Kirby Smart wanted to sign. This time last year, he was chasing several QB’s with this type of profile as contingencies if he was unable to sign Justin Fields. Smart knows now that with 2 5-stars in the fold, it was always going to be tough to get another top QB signed this year. Plumlee has plenty of talent but is a lot further away than the 2 guys he currently has.

That’s fine and fans should understand that he is a project. Jake Fromm came in and showed special leadership traits in his first year. Justin Fields is a generational type of talent who looks like a truly special player. Plumlee is different. He might not even end up sticking at QB when it’s all said and done. Despite that, in Athens, he’ll have a chance.

With Fromm and Fields in town, he’ll be developed slowly and is highly unlikely to see the field until 2021 at the earliest. It wouldn’t surprise me if, in either 2020 or 2021, the Dawgs recruit another 5-star QB as Fromm and Fields graduate and move on. Plumlee will have a chance to win the job by learning the system and developing under his coaches. Once again, that’s exactly what Kirby Smart was looking for.

Based off his statement when he committed, it’s pretty clear that Plumlee likes the idea of competing against Fromm and Fields. That’s the mindset that Kirby always wants from all of his players. Based on the film and that statement, Plumlee should be a great fit in Athens. He’ll be a solid member of what should be another historic recruiting class.
