Georgia football picked up a commitment from Carson Beck, one of the nation’s top quarterbacks on Sunday. Beck was previously committed to Alabama.
Make that two commits in two days. Georgia football now adds a quarterback in the 2020 class, in the form of four-star Carson Beck from Jacksonville, Florida. Beck attends Mandarin High School and is ranked as the no. 3 pro-style quarterback in the nation, and no. 63 player overall according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Last night, wide receiver Justin Robinson committed to the Dawgs. The 2020 class already included offensive tackle Broderick Jones. Georgia’s other two 2020 commits play on the defensive line. But who is Carson Beck?
Beck is 6-4.5 and he weighs 226 pounds. Height isn’t a necessity for quarterbacks, but it helps. Go back to the National Championship Game. Alabama was relentless against Trevor Lawrence, but he’s so tall, Alabama’s pass rush didn’t affect his vision. I’m not comparing Beck to Lawrence yet, just pointing out the advantage of being a tall quarterback.
He’s listed as a pro-style quarterback, so don’t expect him to run circles around defenders or run many option plays. He’s primarily a pocket passer. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t mobile. He can move in the pocket, knows when to roll out and will occasionally run designed roll out or bootleg plays. And if no one is open downfield, Beck is not taking sacks and he’s not immediately looking to throw the ball away, he’ll take off downfield.
But he’s a quarterback, and passing his is first job. Beck sees the field very well and his quick going through his progressions. He’s not going to glance over open receivers very often. If a receiver is wide open, Beck will find him.
Beck does more than just find open receivers, he gets them the ball. He has a strong arm and is very accurate, even on deep passes. But most of all, he knows where to put the ball. If a receiver has space to run, Beck will put the ball in an area where the receiver can make the catch in stride. If a defender is nearby, Beck will throw the ball where only the receiver has a chance to make a catch.
At times, Beck can be a gunslinger. But you have to love his confidence. We might be looking at the future of Georgia’s quarterback position. Dwan Mathis is going to compete, Beck isn’t guaranteed anything. But if Beck lives up to the hype, he’s a future star in the SEC.
