No. 19 All-Time Georgia Team in SRS on Sports-Reference.com (17.93)

The 2007 group is one of the most frustrating teams to discuss.

This team was a win over Alabama away from playing Notre Dame for a national championship.

Had it not been for a game management issue at the end of the game, the victory would have been all but assured. However, we know what happened. The whole season went up in smoke as Conley slid to the ground.

Should Aaron Murray have clocked the ball? Yes.

Should Chris Conley have batted the ball down? Yes.

Would Georgia most likely have three national championships if they had? Yes.

In the regular season, Georgia went 11-1, losing to South Carolina in Columbia. Led by Todd Gurley and his 1,502 yards from scrimmage Georgia ran over its competition, coming up just short at the end because of a coaching error which seems to be the theme for Georgia recently.

This was the second year in a row that the Dawgs led in the SEC Championship game only to blow it. In 2011, Georgia was up 10-7 at the half but never scored again as LSU went on to win 42-10.

Georgia led Alabama heading into the fourth quarter in 2012, only to concede that lead and ultimately lose, as we have seen them do in 2017 and 2018.

This team was full of talent, but it is very hard to ignore the elephant in the room, both figuratively and literally. The one thing that killed this team’s championship chances were bad decisions, made both on the field and on the sideline.

Another Georgia team that controlled its own destiny and let it slip away.
