Georgia Football: Top 5 tight ends since 2000
#2: Isaac Nauta
I know I might get a lot of flack about putting Isaac Nauta at the No. 2 spot on this list, but in my opinion, he has been the second-best since 2000.
He recently left the Dawgs last season to go pro and got drafted by the Detroit Lions.
Since he put on the Georgia hat at the Army All-American game, Nauta has had a spotlight on him. The Dawgs hadn’t seen a tight end like him since Orson Charles, and he got fans excited.
He comes in at No. 2 because Nauta made a splash right away at Georgia. As a freshman, Nauta had 29 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns. One of the most memorable ones was his catch against Tennessee.
As a sophomore, Nauta didn’t get quite utilized like he should have been. He played in all 15 games but only had nine catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns on the season.
One of those touchdowns came in the SEC Championship Game against Auburn. It was the Dawgs first score of the game. The other touchdown came against Mississippi State in a big way. Nauta caught a 41-yard pass in the third quarter which gave the Dawgs a 28-3 lead.
In his final year as a Dawg, he played in all 14 games and had 30 catches for 430 yards and three touchdowns. Nauta finished third on the receiving list with those stats.
He caught a 12-yard pass for a touchdown in the opening game against Austin Peay. Nauta had a season-high against the gators with five catches for 73 yards. However, it was his four-yard catch against Kentucky that helped the Dawgs seal the SEC East for the second year straight.
Nauta’s final touchdown came in a game where he had four catches for 81 yards. For the second year in a row, he caught the opening touchdown in the SEC title game. He caught a 20-yard pass from Fromm to put the Dawgs up 7-0.
While he is probably one of the most successful tight ends for Georgia in recent history, I feel like he left a lot of unfinished business at the school, but everyone decides on what they feel like is best for them.
Nauta was one of the highest-ranked recruits that Georgia has ever landed at tight end, I just with the offensive coordinators would have used him more than they did. Anyway, he’s No. 2 for now because so many people will remember him for those clutch touchdown catches in the SEC title games and throughout his career.
