Toumani Camara

Toumani Camara is a name you need to know. His play from the beginning of the season to the end showed the most improvement of anyone on the Georgia basketball team. The 6-8 true freshman began the year as Amanze Ngumezi’s understudy in the post, averaging 15.8 minutes per game as a reserve with a pretty good 4.5 points per game and an alright 3.3 rebounds per game.

Ngumezi’s dismissal from the team in the middle of December forced Camara to grow up fast. He experienced some growing pains when he landed the starting job. But he showed his potential with a pair of stellar games against Georgia Southern (16 points, seven rebounds) and Austin Peay (eight points, nine rebounds).

Camara struggled a little bit early in SEC play. He had a few good scoring games, but he couldn’t complete them on the boards. That changed gradually until Georgia hosted the Auburn Tigers on February 19. It was Camara’s performance against the Tigers that should have fans excited about his future the most.

Against the then No. 13 ranked Tigers, Camara dropped 12 points with eight rebounds and three steals. Most of his points came in the last minute at the free-throw line. Georgia needed him to sink a few foul shots to put the game away, he made 10. Camara added a couple of steals in that last minute to help put the game away.

If that’s what Camara was capable of as a true freshman, what will he look like next year? Remember, he was only starting games late in the season because a teammate was dismissed from the team. After a year of experiencing big-time college basketball and maturing through the experience, Camara’s best days are ahead of him.
