2021 Georgia Football Roster Preview: Quarterbacks
By Eric Taylor
Taking a look at the quarterbacks on Georgia football’s roster for 2021.
In today’s college football a team is only going to go as far as their quarterback will take them. That could not be any more true for the Georgia football team in 2021. Todd Monken schemed open at least one Georgia receiver on every one of Georgia’s passing plays last season. The problem was the execution from the quarterback position, more precisely their awareness.
That execution did get better as the year progressed, mainly because of a quarterback change after the Florida loss. In that game, Georgia quarterbacks overthrew receivers on five different would-be touchdowns. In fact, 47 of the 183 passes attempted by Georgia football’s quarterbacks from the Arkansas game to the Florida game, were uncatchable and six more were thrown away.
According to SEC Stat Cat, Georgia’s quarterback’s averaged 14.5 inaccurate passes a game in the first six games of the season. Over the last four, the average went down to 12.5. Georgia’s quarterbacks averaged 7.8 uncatchable targets a game in the first six games of the season. That went down to just five a game in the last four games.
With that said let’s get into who will be on Georgia’s roster at quarterback this season.
JT Daniels
Georgia football was a competent quarterback away from possibly being undefeated in 2020. That will not be a problem in 2021 as JT Daniels is most likely going to be the starter. Daniels didn’t play until the seventh game of the season in 2020, but he made an immediate impact. In the six games, Daniels was out due to injury, Georgia averaged 249.6 passing yards per game. In the four games, Daniels started, Georgia averaged 310.75 passing yards per game.
Daniels now will have a full offseason under Todd Monken’s tutelage which should help the offense be even more efficient. This time will allow him to build up even more chemistry with his receivers as well. Getting his timing down with his receivers will cut down even further on his inaccurate and uncatchable throws.
Georgia’s offense could be quite dangerous with Daniels at the helm. It has the potential to be the best in the SEC this season.
Stetson Bennett
As much as some of the Georgia football fans piled up the criticism towards Stetson Bennett he lead Georgia to four wins over SEC competition last season. The only teams that Bennett lost to were Alabama and Florida, two top fifteen teams. Bennett held down Georgia until Daniels was ready to go. It wasn’t always pretty, but the Ws are what mattered.
Bennett is a competent veteran back up, and that is most likely what his role will be in 2021. Georgia football could do a lot worse than Bennett as their QB2.
Brock Vandagriff
Georgia football has brought in yet another five-star quarterback into their quarterback room. Amidst a bunch of talk about Kirby Smart messing up his quarterback situation in 2020, he locked down the number two quarterback in the 2021 recruiting cycle. He now has two five-star quarterbacks on his roster for the third time in his time as Georgia’s head coach.
Vandagriff joins Georgia after leading Prince Avenue Christian High School to a Georgia state championship and being named to the 2020 Georgia High School Football All-State Team.
Carson Beck
Georgia football fans shouldn’t forget about Carson Beck as he is still on the roster and fighting for playing time. Even with the addition of Vandagriff and Bennett coming back, Beck has a year under his belt in Monken’s offense as well and could be in the mix to earn some snaps this season. Snaps were at a premium last year with a ten-game SEC schedule.
The competition between Beck and Vandgriff in spring and summer practice is going to be worth paying attention to. It will have a lot of implications going into 2022.
