Heisman Trophy candidates to watch in Week 6
With it being Week 6 of the college football season, the Heisman Trophy race is tighter than it has been in years.
According to the numbers at WynnBet, Alabama’s quarterback Bryce Young is the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy going into week six of the college football season.
Young Led the Crimson Tide to a 21-42 win at home last week against Ole Miss. He connected on 20 of his 26 passing attempts for 241 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Young finished the game with a 91.1 QB rating.
Young is currently sitting at 18th in the country with a total of 1,365 passing yards. He has thrown 17 touchdown passes with only two interceptions. He has been the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy since the opening weekend of the season.
His best performance so far has been in the season opener against the Miami Hurricanes. He tossed the ball for 344 yards with a receiver finding the endzone four times.
Heading into Week Six, the Tide has only lined up against two SEC teams but has beaten three ranked opponents. If Alabama can win the SEC West, Young has to be considered a Heisman Trophy finalist.
Other Heisman Hopefuls
Matt Corral
Even following the loss to Alabama, Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral is still the second favored candidate to win the Heisman, according to WynnBet. Corral connected on 21-of-29 passing attempts in the loss, good for 213 yards and a touchdown. He finished the game with a 68.2 QBR.
Corral has completed 87 of 125 passing attempts for a total of 1,210 yards, 10 touchdowns, and is yet to be picked off by a defender. As impressive as those numbers are, keep in mind, Ole Miss has already been off for a week this season.
So Corral’s numbers should be a little lower than everyone else’s.
This week, Ole Miss will be at home against No. 13 Arkansas, but I don’t see Corral winning the Heisman without his team being the SEC champions. With the loss to Alabama, that’s going to be nearly impossible to do. Still, he is sitting at second on the list of favorites at +300.
CJ Stroud
Many people have written the Ohio State Buckeyes off following a difficult start to the season, including a 35-28 loss at home to the Oregon Ducks.
While they aren’t as strong as fans expected, Ohio State is marching uphill. Stroud is a considerable part of that.
Stroud has completed 80-of-124 passing attempts for 1,293 yards, 13 touchdowns, and just three interceptions through the first five games of the season. He completed 17 of 23 passes for 220 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s 52-13 win at Rutgers.
While the Buckeyes haven’t been off for a week this season, Stroud didn’t play against Akron in week four. So, just like Corral, his numbers should be a little lower than other quarterbacks.
Ohio State has some very competitive games left in the schedule. They still play No.4 Penn State, No. 11 Michigan State, and No. 9 Michigan. That’s without including a Big 10 Championship game.
As slow as the season started for Stroud and the Buckeyes, they can still win their conference. If they can do that and make the College Football Playoffs, I think Stroud has to be considered on the outside looking in at the Heisman Trophy. He currently sits at +1500, fourth on the list of favorites.
Bijan Robinson
Sophomore running back Bijan Robinson has been making a ton of noise since Texas lost 40-21 against Arkansas. Since then, he has put together a string of games with totals of 141, 191, and 238 yards from scrimmage while finding the endzone for six touchdowns.
Heading into this week’s matchup against Oklahoma, Robinson has run the ball for 652 yards while crossing the goal line seven times. Along with that, he has 167 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.
Robinson is running for an average of 6.2 yards a carry and 16.7 yards per reception.
There are still a lot of questions to be answered regarding this Texas team. Yes, they lost to Arkansas, but the Razorbacks are much better this season than anyone expected. They simply couldn’t do anything against Georgia.
The Longhorns play No.6 Oklahoma this week, followed by a game at home against No.12 Oklahoma State. While those are the only two ranked opponents on their schedule the rest of the season, they still have a demanding conference schedule.
Robinson is currently at +1500 odds with Wynnbet, ahead of Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler. If Texas loses this weekend, I think it is safe to say Robinson won’t be mentioned as a Heisman candidate again.
However, if Texas can find a way to go on and win the Big 12 Conference, I think his name has to stay in the mix.
