Georgia football hired Kirby Smart in December of 2015. He brought along two coaches from his former employer — long-time assistant coach Mel Tucker and little-known grad assistant Glenn Schumann.

Schumann started coaching at Alabama at 18 years old as a student assistant in 2008. That year is the same one that Smart took over the defensive coordinator position for the Tide.

Then after graduation, he coached as a graduate assistant alongside Smart, who we all know was the Alabama defensive coordinator and inside linebacker coach.

Georgia football has now allowed Glenn Schumann to shine bright.

So when Smart became head coach at Georgia, Schumann was naturally his pick to coach inside linebackers. At 26, Schumann was an on-field coach for an SEC powerhouse. There was also a buzz about this kid, and Smart would gush when speaking of Schumann.

His father, Eric Schumann, was a college football coach as he was a defensive coordinator for eighteen years at multiple schools and finished his coaching career at UAB. Eric also played in the 1970s at Alabama, which is why Glenn grew up an Alabama fan.

With Dan Lanning leaving Georgia to become head coach of Oregon, Smart quickly put out an announcement that Schumann would become co-defensive coordinator along with legendary defensive coach Will Muschamp.

Schumann was actually already listed as a co-defensive coordinator since Mel Tucker left. Lanning was making the calls on the field, but Schumann was part of the building of the game plan.

As Georgia’s inside linebacker, coach Schumann coached two Butkus award winners in Roquan Smith and Nakob Dean. However, his best work would have to be the transformation of Tae Crowder.

Halfway through Schumann’s first year in Athens, Georgia had a redshirt freshman running back who had not played any.

Smart decided to move Crowder to inside linebacker. Then Schumann took Crowder, and by 2017 Crowder was a stand-out on Georgia’s special teams. By 2018 Crowder started as an inside linebacker, and then in 2019, Crowder was a semi-finalist for the Butkus.

In 2020 he was drafted by the New York Giants and is currently the starting linebacker for them still.

Everyone should absolutely chalk that up to Schumann for his player development.

The move is massive if Alabama does pass with Pete Golding. Hopefully, giving Schumann more defense control will keep him in Athens for longer. There is no doubt Schumann will eventually be a big-time head coach in college football if he continues to grow and develop as a coach.

Next. Three Georgia football players that could transfer after this season. dark

Smart to Schumann is a lot like Nick Saban to Smart. They both took chances on young coaches to help lead their defenses. Saban gave Smart the defensive coordinator position at the age of 33, and now Smart has made Schumann co-coordinator at 31. There is a pattern here, and if Schumann is smart, he will follow Smart until the time is right to leave.
