Alabama head coach Nick Saban

When Nick Saban guided his Crimson Tide to a 52-24 victory over the Oho State Buckeyes in the 2021 National Championship game, Saban became the coach in college football with the greatest number of titles at seven.

This total surpasses Bear Bryant with six, Minnesota’s Bernie Bierman and Ohio States’ Woody Hayes, who both won five titles. It is also more than double the national championship wins of Urban Meyer, Knut Rockne, Tom Osborne, Darrell Royale, and Barry Switzer — who all accrued three national titles each.

Saban, who is in his 15th season at Alabama, is still some way behind in the tenure of Paul “Bear” Bryant, who spent 25 seasons in Tuscaloosa.

In fact, Bryant won his sixth title in year 22. Does this mean that Saban has another 10 years in Tuscaloosa? Well, that’s enough to give college football head coaches sleepless nights.

But one nugget of comfort that Georgia fans should lock into is that Saban has never won a national championship north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

The only time that Alabama headed north to play a national championship, Clemson defeated the Crimson tide 44-16 in Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif. Could Lucas Oil Stadium be the Dawgs’ good luck charm?
