The NCAA recently changed a few rules, and one of them was how it relaxed its stance on the importance of conference championship games, and while it sounds okay, it would hurt Georgia football more than help the program.

That decision from the NCAA made feels a bit premature because the playoff committee is so intrigued with conference championships that now it feels like it doesn’t help anyone but those who feel like they’ve gotten left out in recent years.

It’s caused programs to do away with divisions since the conference championships don’t hold as much weight.

Georgia football shouldn’t want to lose divisions and make the SEC Championship less important.

One of the Power 5 conferences has already decided to do away with divisions, as the PAC 12 announced this week. There has been some discussion that the ACC would, but the SEC hasn’t announced.

Georgia shouldn’t want them to abolish the divisions because it would make it harder to get into the playoffs. Right now, if the Dawgs win the SEC East, they have a great chance of being one of the final four teams.

If they took that away, the SEC Championship would look like the Big 12, but it makes better sense to have divisions when there are so many teams.

There have been two divisions in the SEC since 1992, and it has worked for the most part in the 20-plus years it’s been around, so why change it?

With Oklahoma and Texas eventually joining, 16 is a large conference, so maybe having sub-divisions would work, but then it would add a game to decide the two sides and then a championship game. There are a lot of quirks to work out, but losing divisions altogether is not the way to handle this.

Georgia football and the rest of the SEC should want to keep divisions to help give them a better chance of getting two teams in the playoffs.
