Georgia football’s first scrimmage brings intensity outside the heat
Georgia football had its first scrimmage of fall camp today, and it sounded like the event was more intense than the hot weather. Head coach Kirby Smart was not happy with his team’s enthusiasm, but it’s also important to note that it’s the first time tackling in a setting like this, so mistakes can happen.
However, when Smart says he doesn’t like it, that doesn’t always mean it went that bad. He holds them to an extremely high standard — as he should.
According to his press conference on Saturday, the offense was ahead of the defense. He mentioned that the one common team aspect of the defense wasn’t there.
That comment from him was a bit disappointing, but at the same time, the fans should know this is a work in progress. Fans should expect that the offense’s progress is farther along with the experience that side of the ball has.
Georgia football saw an intense first scrimmage, which is a good sign for the Dawgs.
No team is perfect after their first scrimmage, and if they are, then fans should be worried. Perfection comes after you work through things that need work. If nothing needs work, that brings complacency.
For the most part, it was a day that didn’t see a lot of guys get banged up, which is a positive thing to note.
There have been injuries in practice, including Arian Smith which is a blow because that poor guy cannot catch a break. As for other injuries, some other guys like Earnest Greene, Kendall Milton and Tate Ratledge are dealing with some minor things.
No one wants to see players get hurt, but hopefully, all of those guys will heal and be back for the season. Smith will likely have to be out longer, but hopefully, the other three can see the field again sooner than later.
First scrimmages will always be rough, and that should be something fans expect. Things will improve for the next scrimmage and moving into these last 21 days before the Dawgs take on the Ducks. Deep breath, Georgia fans, there was far more good than bad out of this first scrimmage, but there is still work to get done.
