Georgia football vs. Kentucky Wildcats

Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart will watch the infighting at Lexington with interest and concern. No one wants to face an angry wildcat, but that’s what the Dawgs could well encounter in their penultimate game of the 2022 SEC campaign.

This week football head coach Mark Stoops and basketball head coach John Calipari clashed publicly. The altercation was over words Calipari said on his frustration at the lack of progress of his new basketball facility.

Calipari lashed out publicly, reminding everyone that Kentucky is a basketball school, which is true. Kentucky is one of the premier basketball schools in the country. But it largely snubbed the very impressive work that football head coach Stoops and his staff have been working on the last ten seasons.

Stoops responded via his Twitter account, saying, “Basketball school? I thought we competed in the SEC?”.

On the face of it, this might seem like an innocuous Twitter spat between two egotistical head coaches. However, it also emphasizes the disrespect Stoops and his coaching staff seemingly receive for flying under the radar.

Last season Kentucky finished runners-up in the SEC East with a 10-3 record. This finish was a turning point in Stoop’s time at Kentucky and put the team in the national spotlight.

What does all this mean for Georgia football? A football coach likes nothing better than building an “us against them” mentality. Pull down the shutters and have the team fight against the rest of the world. Stoops will do this, giving Smart night sweats as he gets closer to 19th November.

If there is such a thing, there is a quiet hype surrounding the Wildcats program, and look no further than Kentucky’s starting quarterback Will Levis.

Levis has spent the summer charming the football world. Levis is projected to be a first-round NFL Draft pick and has been doing the rounds of every major sports channel during the off season. It’s fair to say that the football world has fallen in love with the Kentucky quarterback who adds mayo to his coffee.

Last season Georgia convincingly beat the Wildcats 30-13. However, the game was tight aside from the third quarter, in which Georgia outscored the Wildcats 10-0. Levis threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns, meaning he is a quarterback who can attack the Georgia defense. The question is, can he do it again without his favorite wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson?

Finally, this game is in Lexington, and there is no doubt that Smart knows how tough this game could end up being. In 2021 Kentucky had a 5-1 record at home, with the one defeat being a 45-42 defeat to a resurgent Tennessee. So playing a Kentucky team with a chip on its shoulder with Levis at quarterback and home in Lexington could be the biggest challenge the Bulldogs face in 2022.
