Georgia football: One quick thing about the quarterback ‘competition’

Georgia football fans are already abuzz about the upcoming “competition” for starting quarterback, but they may be disappointed in the outcome.

Stetson Bennett is gone, and he’s not walking through that locker room door again. At least, not as an active player on the roster. That means for the first time in a couple of years, there’s going to be an outright position battle to see who takes over.

One thing you won’t hear is Kirby Smart, Todd Monken, or any other Georgia football coach saying “It’s (player’s) job to lose”.  Not gonna happen. Not even close.

If you are hoping to hear the Georgia coaching staff declare that they know who the starter will be between Carson Beck, Gunner Stockton, and Brock Vandagriff, you’re in for a big disappointment.

Yes, Carson Beck got the majority of the backup snaps behind Bennett this past season.

Yes, Kirby Smart has stated he’s on board with the value of a mobile quarterback, perceivably giving Stockton the edge.

Yes, Vandagriff supposedly has both the howitzer arm and racecar wheels to make him stand out among the crowd.

None of that means a thing. You can ask all three of them if it means a thing because all three of them failed to unseat scrappy little Stetson Bennett and now must operate in his diminutive shadow.

It doesn’t matter what Vegas says (right now, the money is overwhelmingly on Carson Beck), Kirby Smart isn’t betting, he’s trying to win a third straight national championship, and he and his staff are going to put the quarterback in place who they feel best gives the team a chance to win.

Carson Beck has not been anointed any more than his counterparts have. Not to mention, it’s only January. We’ve yet to see the inevitable five-star transfer quarterback enter into the conversation.

So let’s just sit back and watch it all play out. Let’s revel in the fact that Georgia currently has three guys who could start on any team in the nation, and two of them will be playing a backup role in 2023. Let’s marvel at the depth that has been built and not concern ourselves with second-guessing Kirby Smart’s choice.

Anyone who doubted Stetson Bennett should have learned that lesson by now.

Let the games begin!
