Georgia Football: A breakout star emerges
By Max Tolbert
Georgia Football has a new breakout star. This time it came from the transfer portal.
It’s no secret that many around the football program believe that Dominic Lovett has been the star of fall camp. Almost every piece of Georgia media you have consumed has been about Lovett. That does not come as a surprise to many that have followed him since he was in Missouri.
Lovett hails from East St.Louis, which is known for its production of football talent. Lovett was a 4-star in the 2020 recruiting class and made his way to Missouri. In his first playing season with the Tigers, he recorded 26 receptions with 173 yards catching. His sophomore season was his breakout season. He recorded 56 receptions with 846 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Many of us Georgia fans know all too well of Lovett’s talent. Against the Dawgs Lovett caught 6 passes for a total of 84 yards.
When Lovett transferred to Georgia, I am sure many of you were like me and did not understand why Georgia went into the portal and got two receivers. But now with Dom Blaylock and AD Mitchell leaving in the portal it makes more sense now.
I would expect Rosemy-Jacksaint, Lovett, and McConkey to be the starting trio for wide receivers. Lovett not only gives Georgia a sure-handed route runner but also gives Georgia the ability to stretch the field and showcase Beck’s arm strength.
Can you imagine Arian Smith, McConkey, and Lovett out there with Brock Bowers? What does a defense do to cover that? There is way too much speed and too good of route runners to cover.
Lovett gives Georgia more flexibility in the passing game. Something the Dawgs have not had since Aaron Murray was the QB. It will be nice to finally watch a Georgia offense be dangerous in the deep passing game.
I know many of you reading this are probably thinking, “Well Georgia had a good passing game last year!” Yes, that’s true Georgia did have a good passing game last year. But they never had the deep ball threat.
Everything Georgia did in the passing game was to get the guys open. Whether that be deception or great route running. There is nothing wrong with that. But with Lovett, Georgia now will be looking for the home run throws. This makes Georgia’s offense even more dangerous when you consider how balanced they are.
I expect Georgia to have a 1,000-yard receiver this season. It could be Bowers, McConkey, Rosmey-Jacksaint, Arian Smith and it could be Lovett. I have high hopes for this Georgia offense and high hopes for Lovett as well. I think the word around town is correct; Lovett is going to be a star for Georgia.
