Georgia Football: instant reaction to Dawgs win over Ball State
By Max Tolbert
While Athens burned down after a 0-0 tie at the end of 1st quarter, Georgia football beat Ball State 45-3. If you were on social media during the 1st quarter, you would have seen fans upset at the Dawgs offensive performance.
If someone had a live stream of my living room during the game, I was just as bad as the social media reaction. But after the game and being able to think, it was not all that bad in the first quarter.
Georgia only had two drives in the 1st quarter, and the Dawgs should have had points off of their first drive of the game. It’s football, things happen. After a sleepy start, the Dawgs scored 45 straight points. It was not pretty initially, but the Dawgs looked good after the 1st.
Mehki Mews and Dillon Bell stole the show with both getting big touchdowns. Mekhi Mews returned a punt for a touchdown, and Bell, a receiver, lined up at running back and took one to the house.
At one point in the first quarter, Carson Beck was trending on Twitter (X?). Beck was trending for the wrong reason because some in the fan base didn’t think he met their expectations. I’m not sure what you want out of the kid. Beck was 23 of 30 passing attempts and threw for 283 yards with a pair of touchdowns.
Beck isn’t Stetson Bennett.. oh wait, some in the fan-based whined when Stetson played, too. I know I am wasting my finger energy writing this, but the Georgia fans complaining about Beck after two starts need to shut up. It’s ridiculous. The offense did not execute well in the first quarter. Nothing Beck did was terrible. Georgia can win another National championship with Beck. I am already tired of people whining about the QB.
I do not know how much more I can take of Georgia fans questioning Kirby Smart’s decisions regarding who plays QB for the Dawgs. It has gone on since 2016, and it is wearing thin.
Anyway, the offense looked fine for the rest of the game, and so far, the offense is averaging 39.5 points per game. Thats solid. Now, are some of the play calls head scratching? Yeah, at times, but it has improved over the past two games. So relax on Bobo. Have at ’em if we can not move the ball on South Carolina. Until then, chill out.
Defensively, it was another solid performance. Not only did the Dawgs just give up 3 points, they forced three turnovers. Ball State only had 224 yards total and only ran for 77 yards. Again, it was a solid performance.
At this point, I am nitpicking, but I would love to see the defense shut down the run more consistently. Many fans have expressed their worries about the run defense, and I agree with them. I hope it will be slightly different when we start SEC play.
The second half was a snoozer, and bless your heart if you stayed committed to not turning the channel during commercials. Even more kudos go to the fans that stayed the entire game. Y’all deserve some sort of honorary medal from Kirby Smart.
Fighting to stay up late in the third quarter, I could not help but watch C.J. Allen. The freshman linebacker is a flat-out ball player. It would not shock me if he is in the rotation later in the year and getting more snaps. I came away really impressed by Allen and his effort on every play.
Overall, it was a good game for the Dawgs. They improved a ton from last week’s game and looked to have corrected some of their minor issues. It will be interesting to hear Kirby Smart’s thoughts on the game.
Also, I cannot wait to watch Georgia play a real game against a real opponent, no matter how I feel about the Gamecocks. We will have to watch for the news on Javon Bullard’s injury. Hopefully, he and a few more Dawgs will be back next week.
