Georgia Football: Feeling sad after the loss? Kirby Smart is here to lift you up
By Max Tolbert
Kirby Smart has led Georgia football for eight seasons, and this season is his best coaching job. This Georgia team has some major flaws but is one of the four best teams in the country. Nobody reading this blog would argue with that. But watch this clip from Kirby Smart All-Access and tell me that the Georgia program is not in the right hands.
This clip also shows the maturity of Smart as a Head Coach. Smart knows how to manage better than he has in the past. This is one of those examples. My other takeaway was that Smart knew the odds were not in the Dawgs’ favor in the SEC Championship, and they had to play a perfect game.
Smart is right when he said they made too many mistakes to deserve to win that game. They made about two or three, which cost them the game. In any other game against any other opponent, Georgia probably still wins. But you cannot make that many mistakes against Alabama and Nick Saban.
But the overall takeaway from that entire clip is why Georgia has won two national championships and why they will more as long as Kirby Smart is the head coach of this Georgia football program. It is the culture.
At the end of the speech to the team, he discussed the program’s four pillars. Then he said it has to mean something to you, even during a loss. That almost made me want to run through a wall. The man understands what it takes to be a winner.
It hurts that Georgia is not in the playoffs and has to play in a meaningless bowl game against another team that got screwed over by the CFP committee. But, after watching that clip, I felt a lot better about where the program is heading.
This type of loss often would derail a program and a dynasty, not at Georgia. Georgia is going to keep ascending to the top of college football. It might not be this year or next year, but soon, the Dawgs will be the best program in college football, and they will be head and shoulders above any other program. As long as Kirby Smart is the head coach at Georgia and keeps getting chances to win a title, there will be more titles in the future.
Climbing that mountain is not easy, and it looks different for every program that has done it. But the program is in the right hands, with Kirby Smart leading it to the promised land. Smart has built a culture that can sustain success.
