Key Takeaways

1. Oregon continues to separate themseleves as No. 1 team

Oregon is coming off another great week as they destroyed a ranked Illinois team 38-9. This is the Ducks third quality win of the season, and potentially its best considering the final score.

Oregon was the No. 1 seed in last week's rankings, and the Ducks dominant performance this week took away any doubt that they deserve the top seed.

Georgia is more than capable of beating Oregon and would probably be favored as well, but until Oregon loses the No. 1 seed will likely remain with the Ducks.

2. One bid from the Big 12

One team that many might think is missing is BYU. They are a top 10 team in the AP Poll so surely they deserve to make the 12-team CFP field, right?

Not in these rankings.

As it stands today, Iowa State is my pick to be the Big 12 champion, meaning they get an automatic top four seed in the playoffs. However, if the Cyclones end up losing at any point, whether it be in the Big 12 championship game or sooner, they will be on the outside looking in. The same is true for BYU.

It's looking very likely that BYU and Iowa State will play for the Big 12 championship later this seson, and the winner, as mentioned, will automatically make the 12-team field. But the loser has a great chance to be left out, even if that is their only loss of the season because of how weak the Big 12 is this season.

3. Ohio State is comfortably in, but that could change fast

Ohio State is in a very strange spot. Their one loss was by one point on the road to Oregon, and that is a loss that will never keep them out of the CFP. But one more loss could make it interesting.

The Buckeyes travel to Penn State this weekend, and another loss there would really hurt Ohio State. For starters, that would essentially eliminate their chances at winning the Big Ten. Also it is not a guarantee for any two loss team to make it in the 12-team field.

On top of all of that, Ohio State still has to play undefeated Indiana later this season. The Hoosiers are a very hard team to get a read on, but their offense appears to be good enough to beat anyone.

So another loss would make things interesting for Ohio State, putting the Buckeyes in a position they never thought they'd be in this season.
