2024 Week 7 12-team College Football Playoff prediction
Week 7 has come and gone in the college football world and the race to make College Football Playoffs are really beginning to take shape.
With each passing week more teams eliminate their chances of making it into the inaugural 12-team field while others cement themselves as national championship contenders. So let’s dive in and see how I see the 12-team field playing out the rest of the season.
Rank | Team | Bid |
---|---|---|
1 | Texas | SEC Champ |
2 | Oregon | Big Ten Champ |
3 | Miami (FL) | ACC Champ |
4 | Iowa State | Big 12 Champ |
5 | Ohio State | At-Large |
6 | Georgia | At-Large |
7 | Alabama | At-Large |
8 | Clemson | At-Large |
9 | Penn State | At-Large |
10 | Notre Dame | At-Large |
11 | LSU | At-Large |
12 | Boise State | Mountain West Champ |
The obvious frontrunner to land the top spot is Texas, who just destroyed their biggest rival Oklahoma 34-3 in the Red River Rivalry.
Elsewhere in the SEC, Georgia and Alabama won games that were a lot closer than they should have been, but both are firmly still inside the field with room to spare. LSU won an OT thriller against Ole Miss to take the final at-legs spot in my prediction. Tennessee and Ole Miss can still play their way into the field, but I personally see them being left on the outside looking in.
Coming in at No. 2 we have a newcomer to the Big Ten in Oregon who just knocked off No. 3 Ohio State in a thriller in Eugene. The Buckeyes played well on the road and to me look like the third best team in college football, but because of seeding rules they fall back to No. 5. Rounding out the top four we have ACC champ Miami (FL) and Big 12 champ Iowa State. Clemson is trending up since their week one loss to Georgia, but I give the edge to Miami in the ACC for now. But don’t worry Clemson fans, you’ll still be in the 12-team field.
Iowa State is the only team from the Big 12 I have making it in.
Lastly we have the highest ranked Group of five champ in Boise State. The Broncos are the clear favorite with Hesiman hopeful Ashton Jeanty leading the way. There’s a very realistic chance the Broncos move into the top four as I believe they could pass whoever the Big 12 champ ends up being in the rankings, but for now we’ll keep them as the last team in.
Notre Dame also squeaks in at No. 10, but one more loss for them and they’ll officially be out for good.
Looking ahead to week 8 we see the SEC take center stage in college football. Georgia travels to Texas while Tennessee heads to Alabama in what is a loaded conference slate.
A Longhorns win would cement them as the clear cut national championship favorite m while a win from UGA could see them take the No. 1 spot back. Meanwhile the loser of the Tennessee and Alabama game could find themselves outside the top 12 altogether.
Things are beginning to heat up, so hopefully Georgia brings their A-game to Austin in this week’s College Gameday featured game.
