Georgia football has the reputation for being Running Back U since the Herschel Walker era, and half a dozen key backs on NFL teams underscore that title. However, each faces unique challenges to break through with their teams. Let's take a quick look at each.
Georgia’s top NFL backs this season
D'Andre Swift looks to be the lead weapon out of the backfield to add to quarterback Caleb Williams' passing attack for the Chicago Bears. Swift does need to improve on a disappointing 2024 season, where he finished in the lower half of several key stats for NFL running backs.
Despite two years' of stellar numbers, James Cook faces doubts on his durability with the Buffalo Bills as a potential 300-carry back. At 5' 11'' and 190 pounds, he lacks the size of Saquon Barkley or Derrick Henry. Nonetheless, he is set to be the No. 1 running back for the Bills as they seek their first Super Bowl win in decades.
Shouts of "Zeus" have followed Zamir White from Athens to Las Vegas, and he is in a solid No. 2 running back behind rookie Ashton Jeanty for the Raiders. Head Coach Pete Carroll is impressed, saying, "He's shown he's got a real knack, got really, really, good quick feet that are real natural to the position."
Don't forget about Trevor Etienne and Kenny McIntosh
The Carolina Panthers are expecting rookie Trevor Etienne to have an immediate impact, especially on their special teams. Brandt Tillis, the executive VP for football operations with the Panthers, said, "[Etienne] was the guy that we were convicted on as both a returner, which is important for us moving forward, and as a running back."
While Seattle Seahawk rookie Kenny McIntosh is on injured reserve, he has upside potential that can’t be denied. He brings outstanding pass-catching skills, plus added value as a kick returner. Once he returns from IR, look for the Seahawks to also deploy him on key third down situations.
