The upcoming offseason has a chance to see the most head coach openings become available at once in quite some time. There are already a few big programs who have fired their head coaches who are already reaching out and looking for their next head coach, and it's just a matter of time until more follow suit.
Programs like Penn State, Florida and Oklahoma State are the bigger names who have already fired their head coach, and teams like Auburn, Wisconsin and Michigan State might not be far behind. This doesn't even account for the smaller schools like Colorado State who have fired their head coach as well.
Kirby Smart has made Georgia so successful over the past decade that he has turned his assistant coaches into top candidates for head coach openings almost every year. And that most certainly could be the case this offseason with Georgia's top two corrdinators.
Glenn Schumann, Mike Bobo could be impacted by 2026 head coach carousel
Defensive Coordinator Glenn Schumann and Offensive Coordinator Mike Bobo will likely be candidates for a few of these head coach openings this offseason. Both Schumann and Bobo were recently extended by Smart, but that won't stop other teams from swooping in and attempting to steal them.
Bobo has been a head coach once before at Colorado State, but his five year stint in charge of their program did not go so well. That is the only time he has been a head coach, so it's unclear if he even wants to be a head coach again, but that experience could be enough for a school to give him a chance this offseason.
Schumann on the other hand has never been a head coach throughout his career. It's very likely this is something he wants to work towards in his career, so if a school comes calling he might be willing to leave Georgia to become their head coach. Georgia's defense however has been very inconsistent this season, so that could turn off the big name schools, but a smaller program like Colorado State might be willing to give him a chance.
Losing Bobo would be a catastrophe because he has been an elite play caller for Georgia this season, but UGA fans might be willing to lose Schumann because of the struggles on defense this season. But losing a coordinator, no matter how good or bad they are performing, is tough to overcome, but at a school like Georgia it is bound to happen at some point.
And with all the head coaching openings that will be available this offseason, it wouldn't be surprising to see Bobo or Schumann depart Athens this offseason.
