A few days ago Georgia was feeling very good about their 2027 recruiting class. They still were just barely ranked inside the top 10, but they had three five-star recruits already committed.
That hardly ever happens this early in the recruiting cycle even at a program like Georgia.
Unfortunately that accomplishment didn't last as defensive back Donte Wright decommitted from Georgia and flipped to Miami just last week. And if that wasn't bad enough, he just announced on social media that he is shutting his recruitment down which shows just how little he cared about Georgia while he was committed.
RECRUITMENT SHUT DOWN!!! I’m all with @CanesFootball Time to load up… #1 class loading up #TAKE0FF™️🏃🏾💨💨💨

5-star Donte Wright slams the door in Georgia's face immediately after decommitting
Wright wasn't just any commit for Georgia, he was one of the best commits they could've asked for. He originally committed to the Bulldogs last summer before he was even a five-star recruit. That means Kirby Smart identified the talent that he was long before any other school or recruiting site did.
Wright initially looked like he was going to honor Georgia because of the trust they put in him. He remained loyal to his commitment for the rest of 2025 and hardly ever gave another school the time of day, but that eventually changed.
Throughout 2026 reports began to circulate about all of the other schools that he was starting to show interest in. That interest reached an all time high when he was actually predicted to flip to Oregon over a month ago.
At that point it felt like this recruitment was over and Georgia was never going to come back. That turned out to be true, but Wright had one final wrinkle up his sleeve as he decided to flip to Miami instead.
And this final announcement about shutting his recruitment down is the final nail in the coffin. He was unwilling to do that for Georgia even after being committed for nearly 10 months, but apparently he can do that for Miami days after committing to them.
Donte Wright's decommitment leaves a big hole that Georgia needs to fill
So what does Georgia do now? Losing a five-star commit is already bad enough, but a week earlier they lost another top 100 defensive back in Jerry Outhouse who flipped his commitment to UCLA.
This leaves Georgia with a lot of holes to fill at a position where teams tend to add a lot of recruits. As it stands right now Georgia has zero defensive backs committed to their 2027 recruiting class which is as bad as it gets especially when compared to the pair of elite commits they had just two weeks ago.
Something needs to change in a hurry.
There are a lot of very good defensive backs out there that Smart is likely already in a good spot with, but those recruits aren't publicly known at this time. Thankfully official visit season is about to begin which will tell fans which players Georgia is after in the secondary.
And if this official visit season is anything like last year fans should expect more commits than they can even count.
