5-star Donte Wright robbed Georgia of the one thing fans have been begging for

A few weeks ago five-star Donte Wright flipped his commitment from Georgia to Miami. While this loss was expected it was still very difficult to witness as he had been committed to Georgia since last summer.

Georgia identified his talent long before he was a five-star recruit. But instead of rewarding Georgia for believing in him before anyone else he jumped ship to a school because they offered him more money.

Now that he is committed to Miami he has become the perfect commit. Not only has he shut his recruitment down already, but he is actively recruiting other players to come to Miami with him.

Donte Wright leaves no doubt that he was never a good fit for Georgia

Miami is already benefiting from having Wright committed to them now. Not only do they not have to worry about him flipping again, but he is actively helping them recruit more players to join him at Miami.

This was something that Wright never did while he was committed to Georgia. In fact, the exact opposite happened where some of Georgia's other commits were recruiting him and trying to convince him to stick with Georgia. But those pitches never seemed to matter to him as he continued to welcome other schools into his recruitment.

As mentioned, Wright originally committed to Georgia last summer. This would've given him plenty of time to help Georgia recruit even more players, but that was something he was not interested in. But apparently all it took was more NIL money to make him want to help the school he is committed to.

Donte Wright is a reminder of the dark sides of recruiting

NIL has changed the recruiting landscape in college football forever. Georgia has still been one of the top programs on the recruiting trail, but every year NIL seems to matter more and more to recruits and that could eventually catch up to Georgia.

Wright is the perfect example of the dark side of recruiting that Georgia now faces. They built an early relationship with him, went all in on him before any other school and earned his commitment before most schools even knew who he was. But then he blew up on the recruiting scene, attracted more attention and left Georgia in the dust as soon as possible.

So all of that hard work Kirby Smart did to win his recruitment last year was for nothing because in the end Wright only cared about how much money he was going to make.

This trend is continuing elsewhere as other schools who were never really a factor to Georgia are now dominating in recruiting. Just look at Texas A&M who has the No. 1 recruiting class in the country with their five five-star commits. The Aggies have rarely been a team Georgia needed to worry about, but that is no longer the case.

Relationships in recruiting no longer matter as much as they once did. That is terrible news for Georgia because no one is better at building relationships than Smart, but now it is up to him to pivot and find a new way to still be successful in the ever-evolving NIL landscape.
