It has not been a good run for Georgia when it comes to five-star recruits in the last few days. The Bulldogs were at an all time high after five-star quarterback Jared Curtis committed to UGA, but five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell’s shocking decision to commit to Miami (FL) halted any momentum Georgia had.
Entering this weekend however, there was a lot of hope that things would change. Not only is Georgia hosting nine elite prospects on their official visits, but Georgia also had plans to bring in a five-star linebacker as well.
Those plans however have changed, which is another big loss for Georgia on the recruiting trail.
Xavier Griffin no longer visiting Georgia this weekend
Five-star linebacker Xavier Griffin is the No. 1 linebacker in the country and the No. 8 overall player, according to 247Sports. Griffin is from the Peach State, but he had been committed to USC since last summer.
That changed on Wednesday when he announced his decommitment from the Trojans, which was followed by him announcing a visit to Athens this weekend. That visit however will reportedly no longer be taking place.
It’s unclear why this visit is no longer on the books, so maybe something came up that is forcing him to reschedule this visit. Regardless, this is not the news any Georgia fan wanted to see, especially after losing Cantwel to the Hurricanes.
Georgia can still have a big weekend with the recruits that are coming to campus, and considering all nine players are four-stars or better it’s easy to see how UGA can still have a productive weekend. But Griffin no longer being in attendance dampens the mood a little, especially since he is from Georgia.
Time will tell if Kirby Smart can keep Georgia in the running for Griffin or not, but things aren’t looking great right now.
