A rematch against Tennessee in the CFP would be bad news for Georgia

Should Georgia even want to play Tennessee again?

The latest edition of the College Football Playoff rankings have been released, and Georgia football has moved up three spots to No. 7. This move was expected because three teams in front of Georgia lost this past weekend, but many still believe Georgia should be ranked higher because they now have three wins over teams inside the committee's current top 12.

The bright side however with Georgia's current ranking is that they would have a first round playoff game in Sanford Stadium. And to make it even better, it would be against Tennessee. Now that sounds like something any Georgia fan would want to see happen.

But would that actually be a good thing for Georgia?

Is a rematch against Tennessee good or bad for Georgia?

On paper it may seem like a really good thing to get to play Tennessee at home in the first round of the CFP. Obviously a home playoff game is always a good thing, and Georgia has already beat Tennessee this season and the last eight times for that matter.

But even though all of that sounds great, a rematch against Tennessee would not be a good thing for Georgia. Whenever teams play a second time, more often than not the team that lost the first meeting wins the second game. This even recently happened to Georgia which led them to win their first national championship under Kirby Smart.

The Bulldogs lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship game in 2021, but they truned around two games later and knocked them off in the National Championship game.

Whether you would like Georgia to play Tennessee again or not is one thing, but unfortunately this matchup is unlikely to actually happen. If Georgia wins the SEC Championship next weekend they will automatically earn a top four seed and a first round bye. But if Georgia loses one or both of their next two games, then they will fall in the rankings and play someone else.

So while it is fun to think about playing Tennessee again in Sanford Stadium, this matchup has a very little chance of actually happening. But no one can deny how fun it would be to beat the Vols for the second time this season and ninth time in a row.
