Gunner Stockton was great for Georgia in 2025 during his first season as their full time starter. He guided Georgia to an 11-1 regular season and SEC Championship, but he ultimately fell far short of their goals in the College Football Playoff.
No one can deny the obvious traits Stockton has that make him a great quarterback. There might not be a tougher QB in the country than him, and his decision making and running ability are as good as it gets as well. But he does need to improve this year with his effectiveness in throwing the ball down the field.
Aaron Murray understands this as well and he detailed exactly what Stockton needs to do to take his game to the next level.
“There are some things that I like to see improvement from, and a lot of it's going over the middle of the field," Murray said via 247sports.com. “You know, you talk to Georgia fans. You talk to the coaching staff. The one thing that they're gonna really target this year is the tight end position… So, you know Gunnar wants to take the next step in his development if he wants to be a guy that has a chance to lead Georgia to a national championship, someone that wants to be in New York, someone that wants to get recognition when it comes to the NFL and the NFL draft next season possibly, he has to develop that chemistry that comfort throwing the ball kind of between the hashes.“
Aaron Murray details the one thing Gunner Stockton needs to do to take his game to the next level
Stockton's arm overall wasn't good enough last season even if he did make some massive throws. Throughout the season he and his receivers couldn't get on the same page down the field, and the lack of big plays in the passing game ultimately cost them.
But instead of relying on his wide receivers, Stockton needs to become more comfortable with his tight ends down the middle of the field.
A big reason why Georgia won their two national titles in 2021 and 2022 is because Stetson Bennett was extremely effective with his tight ends between the hashes. Sure he was fortunate to have one of the best tight ends in college football history to throw to in Brock Bowers, but Stockton has to learn from his success.
If he can improve the passing game with his tight ends then that should immediately take Georgia's offense to the next level. Thankfully Georgia has the pieces in place to make that happen.
Georgia is perfectly equipped to help Gunner Stockton between the hashes
The good news for Stockton is that Georgia arguably has the best tight end room in the country. Lawson Luckie is back as the leader of this group, but he has a hoard of guys behind him ready to make an impact as well.
This includes sophomore Elyiss Williams along with Ethan Barbour and Jaden Reddell. The Bulldogs also have three elite true freshman coming in as well with five-star Kaiden Prothro leading that group.
Stockton still has to put the work in to be effective between the hashes like Murray is saying, but he has the teammates around him that give him the best chance to be successful.
