Kirby Smart’s legacy is already etched in stone. After winning four SEC Championships and two national titles in 10 seasons, he has already proven that he is one of the best head coaches in college football history.

Georgia fans however want him to go do as the very best, but there is still a lot of work to be done before that becomes a reality. One reason is because of Alabama’s run of dominance that overlapped with the beginning of his tenure. The Crimson Tide however have quickly fallen off the college football map, and that should help propel his legacy even higher.

Alabama's downfall is helping grow Kirby Smart's legacy

Alabama was the one team that Smart has been unable to overcome throughout his career. He did have the one win over the Crimson Tide in the National Championship game, but the countless losses before and after that game hurt his reputation.

Smart however just beat Alabama in the SEC Championship game this season, so he finally has that monkey off his back.

Alabama however dominated the college football world early on in Smart's tenure at Georgia. That dominance no longer exists though because they have only won one College Football Playoff game since 2021. Sure Georgia has gone three seasons without a playoff win, so their recent record does't look that great either, but going back to 2021 the Bulldogs have four playoff wins and two national titles.

If Smart is going to go down as the best head coach in the country he still has a lot more winning to do. But the fact that Alabama isn't as much of a problem as they once were will help him continue to grow his legacy.

And who knows, maybe Georgia will win a few championships in the next few years and help Smart's legacy challenge Nick Saban's.
