Georgia football may have beat Texas in the SEC Championship this past weekend, but it did not come without some key injuries to a couple starters for Georgia.
By now everyone knows that Carson Beck suffered a UCL injury in his right elbow on the final play of the first half. And earlier on Monday, Georgia released a statement saying that he is looking for treatment options and that he is out for the foreseeable future.
But Beck is not the only starter who suffered a season ending injury on Saturday. Punter Brett Thorson suffered a knee injury during the second half as he made a play on a Texas returner that will require season-ending surgery.
Brett Thorson out for the year
Thorson's injury sounds a little more significant than Beck's as he tore pretty much everything in his left knee. Thankfully this is not his kicking leg, so even though he has a long road to recovery ahead of him, this should not impact his future career all that much.
This does however significantly impact the rest of Georgia's season as having an elite punter a very underrated thing to have on your team. The ability for a punter to flip the field after your offense stalls is something that every really good team needs to have, and that is something that Thorson was able to do. His 47.6 yard punt average this season puts him at No. 7 in the country, which proves just how special of a talent he is.
Replacing Thorson is where things get interesting because the backup punter on Georgia's depth chart is true freshman Drew Miller, who is yet to record a punt in his enitre college career.
So pay close attention the first time Georgia has to punt in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, because things could unfortunately get very interesting.
