Georgia football has suffered yet another significant injury in their SEC Championship game against Texas. The first major injury was suffered by QB Carson Beck, who hurt his throwing arm on the final play of the first half.
Fast forward to the second half and midway through the third quarter another starter has gone down with an injury that will take him out for the rest of the game.
Punter Brett Thorson
Punter Brett Thorson had one punt in the third quarter, and on that punt Texas was putting together a solid return. So much so that they made it all the way to Thorson who was able to help force the Longhorns returner out of bounds.
But in doing so, he went down to the ground, ran into a teammate, and suffered what appeared to be a leg injury.
It goes without saying how important a punters legs are, but this injury seemed more than just a minor tweak as Thorson was later seen getting on a cart and being taken back to the locker room.
In a perfect world, Georgia won’t have to punt again the rest of the game, but with how well the Longhorns’ defense has been playing that is unlikely to happen. So Georgia is going to have to rely on their backup punter if it gets to that point.
True freshman Drew Miller was listed on Georgia’s depth chart as the second string punter for today’s game, so he will have to be ready if called upon later in this game. It doesn’t appear that Miller has punted yet in his career, so this would be quite the stage to see his first action.
So pay close attention the next time Georgia punts, as that will be a sticky situation now.
