Georgia football capped off an impressive 7-1 SEC record two weeks ago. Typically that is good enough to make the SEC Championship game, but in a top heavy league they still needed some help.
Ever since Georgia lost to Alabama earlier this season they have been on the outside looking in when it came to the SEC Championship game. They needed a lot of help from either Texas A&M or Alabama, but both teams just kept on winning. Alabama did lose to Oklahoma two weeks ago, but the head-to-head tiebreaker still kept things in the Tide's favor.
But after Georgia's win over Georgia Tech on Friday, the eyes of every UGA fan descended upon Texas. The Longhorns were playing host to undefeated Texas A&M Friday night, and a loss by the Aggies would send Georgia to the SEC Championship game. And thankfully that is exactly what happened as Texas beat the Aggies 27-17.
Arch Manning, Texas give Georgia the boost they needed
The first half of this game was all Texas A&M. Arch Manning and the Texas offense could get nothing going, and the Aggies entered the halftime locker room leading 10-3.
But that is when the game flipped in Texas's favor thanks to the heriocs of Manning. He helped lead Texas to their comeback victory that saw them score 24 points in the second half. And the Longhorns defense played just as well as they picked off Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed twice in the fourth quarter to help seal the Texas victory.
Georgia's SEC Championship game opponent still unknown
Georgia could still play Alabama or Ole Miss in the SEC Championship game next weekend. Their opponent depends solely on what Alabama does against Auburn Saturday night. An Alabama win would give Georgia a chance at some revenge in Atlanta against the Crimson Tide, but a loss would send Ole Miss to the SEC Championship game instead.
Both teams would present a huge challenge to Georgia, so it really doesn't matter who they play. But the chance to finally beat Alabama again might be too good to pass up, so facing the Crimson Tide again might be the opponent Georgia should want.
Regardless of who their opponent is, Georgia is officially in the SEC Championship game and they will have a chance to defend their SEC title on Saturday, Dec. 6.
