Atlanta Falcons rumored to be targeting explosive Georgia WR

Word is spreading that Atlanta should keep Zachariah Branch in the state of Georgia, and it makes too much sense.

Zachariah Branch is coming off of one of the best receiving seasons in Georgia Bulldogs history. In his single season in Athens, Branch broke the school record for receptions in a single season while leading the way with 811 receiving yards as well.

While continuing to impress scouts at the NFL Combine, it is looking more and more like Branch could be a lethal weapon on any team that takes a chance on him in the Draft. However, the Atlanta Falcons are looking more like the perfect fit now than ever before.

Zachariah Branch could be staying close to Georgia in the NFL

As of March 5, the Falcons have announced that they are planning to release Darnell Mooney from the roster. Mooney was signed to the team two seasons ago and was expected to be the main guy behind Drake London. In his first year, he found great success. However, last season Mooney's production fell off dramatically and Atlanta has decided to part ways in what is likely a move to free up some cap space.

With the departure of Mooney, Atlanta desperately needs a new target for Michael Penix. Other than London, the Falcons do not have a true proven receiver on roster. Other than some occasional sparks from former fourth-overall pick Kyle Pitts have been shown, nobody really knows what his future in Atlanta is.

Branch could come to Atlanta and pick up exactly where he left off in Athens. The Falcons have notably hired new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who has experience both on the college and NFL level. Rees has also coached offenses that run similar to what Branch has experienced with Mike Bobo in Athens. While not being the main guy like he was at Georgia, Branch would still be the main slot receiver and given plenty of opportunities to create space. With Khadarel Hodge also hitting free agency, Branch would be given opportunities as a kick and punt returner.

Unless somebody takes a big shot in the first round, Branch will still be available on day two. If so, this is an opportunity the Falcons cannot pass on. Branch is arguably the most explosive and quick receiver in this draft. Any other receiver would not mesh in a slot receiver role as well as Branch could. Last year, Atlanta drafted former Bulldog Jalon Walker in the first round, and it has panned out amazing for them. If they are smart, they will do it again this year.
