The college football world is getting after Kirby Smart.

Recently he spoke about how important it is for Georgia to win a National Championship this season because it’s been three years since they’ve done so. During that statement he recognized how big of an accomplishment winning the SEC two years in a row is, but at the same time he’d much rather win a national title.

In this quote, Smart said winning the SEC is one of the “hardest things to do in sports.” While that may be true in college football (which is what he was referring to) college football fans from across the country were not happy with him after this claim.

These fans make a good point, winning the SEC isn’t one of the hardest things to do in sports. Winning a national title is much more difficult in college football, but expanding beyond just this sport there are countless other things that are far more challenging.

But these fans are missing the point. Smart never intended for this statement to be taken literally. He was just making the point that winning the SEC is hard (which it is) and something they should be proud of accomplishing. No one can disagree with that statement.

These fans however are missing the bigger picture. In the same post these fans are responding to Smart admits that winning the SEC doesn’t matter after two early exits in the playoff in a row.

Fans however never think rationally, but that’s what makes college football so fun. They are loyal to their team (and conference) and anything someone says that’s even a little against their beliefs they will respond negatively to.

But Smart made it clear that his goal is to win a national title, and after he does that these fans won’t have anything else they can say.
