The College Football Playoff committee released their second to last rankings of the season, and Georgia is officially on the move once again. The Bulldogs may have only beat Georgia Tech 16-9, but they got some help from Texas A&M’s loss to Texas which allowed Georgia to move up one spot to No. 3.
Ohio State once again remained at No. 1 while Indiana held steady at No. 2. The Buckeyes and Hoosiers will play for a Big Ten Championship on Saturday, so if Georgia beats Alabama in the SEC title game they will enter the CFP as the No. 2 overall seed.
CFP committee give Georgia brand new playoff path
With Georgia’s move to No. 3 in the CFP rankings, they now flip to the opposite half of the bracket and have new teams they would play. The Bulldogs still have a first round bye, and they would play the winner of Ole Miss’s first round matchup against the committee’s fourth best conference champion. That team would be Virginia if they win the ACC, but if they lose then a Group of Five Champion would likely fill that spot.
Georgia in all likelihood would face Ole Miss in this scenario, and if they win that game they would potentially face No. 2 Indiana. That obviously will change based on the results of the Big Ten Championship game, but for now that is their path.
The only thing that truly matters for Georgia now is their upcoming matchup with No. 9 Alabama. A win in this game would guarantee the Bulldogs the No. 2 seed in the playoff while a loss would see them fall in the rankings and likely host a first round game. So the good news is that Georgia is in the playoff regardless, but a victory gives UGA their second straight conference championship and a first round bye in the playoff.
