On Sunday Georgia football learned that they earned the No. 3 seed in the final College Football Playoff bracket. This was where Georgia was positioned entering the SEC Championship game, and since they beat Alabama everyone thought they would move up to No. 2 because of Ohio State's loss to Indiana.
That however did not occur as the committee kept the Buckeyes above Geoergia at No. 2.
This decision from the committee makes no sense because Georgia has the far better resume. Their resume includes a conference championship which the Buckeyes do not have as well as a better win against Texas. So this should have been enough to give Georgia the better seed.
However, the No. 2 and No. 3 seed really isn't all that different because Georgia and Ohio State will still have to face each other in the semifinals if they both win their first playoff game. But the bigger problem some people have is Alabama's seed as the Crimson Tide came in at No. 9 which is where they were before they lost to Georgia.
However, there may actually be a logical explanation for the committee's decision to keep Alabama at No. 9 instead of dropping them to No. 10.
CFP committee kept Georgia and Alabama on opposite sides of the bracket
The committee had every reason to drop Alabama to No. 10 and move Georgia up to No. 2 after the SEC Championship game. They however decided not to do that. The committee hasn't shared why they didn't make those changes, but it very well could have been to avoid a third matchup between Georgia and Alabama early in the playoff.
If Georgia moved up to No. 2 and Alabama fell back to No. 10 then they could have played in the quarterfinals for a third time this season. That is something the committee likely didn't want to see happen, so they kept both teams where they were already seeded so they were on opposite sides of the bracket. Now the only way for Georgia and Alabama to play again is if they meet in the National Championship game.
Georgia likely wouldn't be scared of playing Alabama since they just beat them with ease, but it is probably the right decision for the committee to avoid a third matchup for as long as possible. But before UGA can even play Alabama again they need to win their quarterfinal and semifinal matchup which will not be easy to do.
