Tuesday night went exactly how Georgia expected. The first edition of the College Football Playoff rankings were revealed on Tuesday and Georgia came in at No. 2 behind undefeated Miami who took the top spot. This was the right decision for the committee to make regarding the top two teams, but every decision after that seemed to have some controversy attached to it.
So while Georgia and Miami got to relax during the rankings show, chaos was erupting all around them.
The CFP committee has some serious explaining to do
One of the biggest controversies from the committee's rankings was seeing two-loss Alabama come in at No. 5. They have some great wins against Kentucky and South Carolina, but at some point their losses have to matter. Tennessee is 6-2 just like Alabama, but they beat the Tide earlier this season. Somehow Tennessee is ranked eight spots lower at No. 13 though.
Ohio State is another team with a similar resume to Alabama at 6-2. Their losses actually might not be as bad because they have two ranked losses on the road while Alabama's lost at home, but the Buckeyes came in seven spots below the Tide at No. 12.
The committee also rewarded Utah for being undefeated even though they've played an easy schedule by ranking them No. 3. There is nothing wrong with that, but UCLA should probably be higher than No. 8 if they are 8-0 against a bad schedule just like Utah.
As of now these controversial decisions don't impact Georgia. As long as UGA keeps winning then they will either be No. 1 or No. 2 in the final CFP rankings depending on what Miami does, but these rankings show how much trouble Georgia could be in if they lose another game.
The controversial CFP rankings could be disastrous for Georgia if they lose again
While Georgia is safe right now, that could change with just one more loss. The CFP committee's rankings on Tuesday showed that they're willing to do anything even if logic doesn't seem to be on their side.
If they can rank Tennessee eight spots lower than Alabama then there isn't anything stopping them from doing the same thing to Georgia. If UCLA can have a similar resume as Utah and Ohio State can have a similar resume as Alabama and they are both ranked far lower then the exact same thing could happen to Georgia too.
Fans and analysts have had issues with the CFP since it began in 2014. That is just how opinion-based rankings work, there will always be someone that disagrees with it and there's no way to avoid that. This year feels different though because this set of rankings might be the most controversial the committee has ever come up with in their 12-year history.
For Georgia's sake they better hope they finish the regular season 4-0 and win the SEC Championship game because who knows what this committee will do if they lose one more game.
