Georgia football wide receiver Colbie Young was hopeful that he could still make a return in time for the College Football Playoff, but the chances for that to happen have evaporated.

Young has been dealing with legal issues after being charged with battery and assault of an unborn child from an arrest that took place on Oct. 8. Since that arrest and those charges were field, the woman involved asked multiple times for the charges to be dropped and Young plead not guilty to the charges on Dec. 10.

However, those charges were not dropped on the 10th, and a trial date was set for May 2025. Young's attorned then requested that his trial date be moved up to early January in hopes that a quick trial in Yonug's favor could allow him to return to the field during the College Football Playoff. On Thursday, Young's trial date was moved up, but it will not be soon enough to make a return to the team this season possible.

Colbie Young new trial date

According to Marc Weiszer at the Athens Banner-Herald, Young's trial date was moved to Feb. 17. While that is nice that the trial will be happening much sooner, this means it will be impossible for Young to join the team in the CFP.

The Bulldogs first CFP game is scheduled for Jan. 1 at the Sugar Bowl, and if the Bulldogs keep winning they will play in the semifinals on Jan 9 and the National Championship game on Jan. 20. So Young's trial date was unfortunately not moved soon enough to make a return for Georgia's CFP run possible.

However, there was a court ruling earlier this week in a separate college football case that stated that time spent at the Junior College level will no longer count against a player's four years of division one eligibility. Young played one year at the JUCO level out of high school, so depending on how his trial goes, he could return in 2025.

So while it is extremely unfortunate that Young’s season this year is officially over, it is nice that he still has the ability to play one more year in college in 2025. Obviously he needs to win his court case first, but if that happens then the epectation would be for him to be in a Georgia uniform next fall.
