The latest College Football Playoff rankings are out, and Georgia football once again is on the move. Two teams ranked in front of Georgia in last week's rankings (Miami (FL) and Ohio State) both lost to unranked teams, so the consensus was that UGA would move up two spots in this week's rankings.
But everyone knows how inconsistent the committee's rankings have been this season, so there is no way to ever guarantee what they are going to do.
So where did Georgia and the rest of the SEC end up in this week's rankings?
Georgia moves up two spots
Georgia has officially entered the top five after beating Georgia Tech, coming in as the No. 5 team in the CFP committee's updated rankings. Ohio State lost to a 6-win Michigan team at home, so they fell behind Georgia to No. 6 while Miami (FL) made a big drop to No. 12 after losing at Syracuse.
While Georgia is No. 5 in the rankings, they fall back to the 7-seed in the 12-team bracket because two teams ranked below Georgia (SMU and Boise State) move into the top four automatically as one of the four highest ranked conference champions. This would match Georgia up with 10-seed Indiana in the first round of the CFP.
Georgia's upcoming opponent Texas moved up one spot to No. 2, which is the seed the Longhorns earned as well.
The biggest surprise of all was 3-loss Alabama sneaking in ahead of 2-loss Miami. However, when looking at their resumes it does make a lot of sense considering Alabama has a few ranked wins on their resume and the Hurricanes have zero.
With one game remaining, Kirby Smart and Georgia's spot in the 12-team field seems clinched. A win and UGA moves into the top four, but most feel that a loss in the SEC Championship game would not be enough to move the Bulldogs outside of the top 12.
