It is an unfortunate situation all around. With news breaking on Monday over Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby checking himself into rehab to treat his gambling addiction, this has the talented signal-caller firmly in the crossfire of the NCAA. He has apparently been gambling since his earliest days at Indiana, as well as during his time at Cincinnati. This is such a heartbreaking scenario.
On the latest episode of See Ball Get Ball, David Pollack touched on what he think is going to happen.
"It's the No. 1 addiction for young people in this country. It's at their fingertips, it's way too easy! I'm not surprised that Sorsby's doing it. I would be shocked if most of players aren't doing it. How they're doing, if they get caught, will be another thing all together."
While Pollack does hope Sorsby gets the help he needs, he feels he wasted a great NFL opportunity.
"The young man checked himself in to get help. So I hope for his sake, he gets help. This was a big opportunity for him. He got a big opportunity at Cincinnati. He could have gone to the NFL. Stayed at Texas Tech."
He continued by saying what the NCAA can and cannot do in all of this when it comes to this scandal.
"We talk about the NCAA all the time, and we talk about their decision making and what they can't do. They do not have subpoena power. So the NCAA a lot of times can't get the facts, and they don't understand what's going on."
Pollack finished his thoughts by saying that he expects for the NCAA "to lay the hammer" on all this.
"Well, they're going to have record of this. The NCAA doesn't play with this. Like, they don't play. And this is a huge topic, a huge opportunity for them to lay the hammer. And I expect they will. I don't think this is going to turn out well in Lubbock for Texas Tech."
Here is everything Pollack had to say about the developing situation involving Sorsby and gambling.
The NCAA rarely gets the chance to make examples out of situations anymore.

But it will not play around with gambling in the Brendan Sorsby investigation, or any that come after it.

The worst part in all this is Pollack is right; the NCAA is going to make an example out of Sorsby here.
David Pollack believes the NCAA will lay the hammer on Brendan Sorsby
This is very simple. Gambling is an incredibly addictive vice that can often get the best of great people. Most humans are generally horrible when it comes to personal finance. While the rush of a win feels amazing, what happens when you are down bad at the table, or in the sports betting world? Frankly, the NCAA needs to do a better job of protecting its student-athletes from sports gambling.
The reason why the NCAA will make an example of Sorsby, or anybody else who gets caught wagering on the games in which they play, is you cannot have the general public believing your games are fixed. Professional wrestling may follow a scripted format, but kayfabe does not cut it in sports. The last thing the NCAA will want is for casual consumers to think their products are a joke!
So where do we go from here? There is not really a good answer to any of this, and that is the worst part. This is a slippery slope. We are talking about a high-end transfer quarterback who could have been a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Now are discussing if Sorsby will actually enter the Supplemental Draft as a result of this. Let's not overlook how much this messes up Texas Tech, too.
Ultimately, we should all hope that Sorsby and everyone else who is struggling with this kind of addiction gets the help and support they need. It is embarrassing for everyone involve. If there is any silver lining to this, it is that Sorsby made a very difficult decision for himself to enter gambling rehabilitation with so much on the line here. This was supposed to be the biggest season of his life.
Unfortunately, because Pollack sees the bigger picture here, he is right in that this will end horribly.
