Late Monday night it was reported that star Oklahoma defensive lineman David Stone suffered a knee injury. It was unclear exactly what happened, but there were concerns that he could miss significant time this season.
Oklahoma travels to Georgia this weekend. Having to play that game without Stone, a projected first round pick, would be a disaster for the Sooners, but head coach Brent Venables provided a positive injury update on Stone that makes it seem like he could still play this weekend.
"David Stone, I know it was reported that he was hurt last night at practice. He wasn't on offense," Venables said via stormininnorman.com. "I guess that was out there; he was on offense. But he wasn't on offense when he got banged up. He ran his knee into a scout team player during a jog through, and kinda popped out."
It was also reported that Stone’s pain level is only a two out of ten.
David Stone’s status remains unclear for Georgia vs Oklahoma
Georgia likely won’t know if Stone will play until the day of their game against Oklahoma this weekend. The SEC requires teams to release injury updates leading into each conference game, at this point though Stone most likely will be in the questionable category on the Sooners injury report.
Stone is one of the best defenders on Oklahoma’s stacked defense. He may only have 12 tackles and 0.5 sacks this season, but he is a projected first round pick. Stone is someone that could give Georgia’s run game a lot of fits while also being a presence in the backfield all night long when Gunner Stockton drops back to pass. Oklahoma has a much better chance at upsetting Georgia with him in the game, so his availability will have a massive impact on this game.
Georgia is heavily favored regardless of Stone’s status. They opened as 14 point favorites before Stone’s injury happened, so if he is ruled out then that number may climb another point or two.
Regardless of if he plays or not Georgia will be expected to beat Oklahoma. It would be nice to not have to go up against someone as talented as Stone, but no one should want to see an opposing player get injured regardless of if it would help Georgia win. It would be nice though to beat Oklahoma when they are at their best. The Sooners are Georgia’s first true test this season, so to get an accurate idea on how good they are they need to go up against a star like Stone.
Oklahoma’s first injury report will be released Wednesday evening. Stone will likely show up in that report in some capacity, but right now it’s impossible to know if he’ll play or not.
