Georgia is a few days away from facing Oklahoma in their second SEC game of the season. This figures to be their most difficult game up to this point in the season, but a new injury to Oklahoma defensive lineman David Stone could completely change the outlook of this game.
Stone is one of Oklahoma’s top defenders as he is a big body that can effectively clog running lanes and get to the quarterback. He however suffered a lower-body injury at practice on Monday that could keep him out of Saturday’s game, and if he’s eventually ruled out Georgia’s run game could flourish this weekend.

David Stone’s injury could help Georgia’s offense be more effective
So far this season Stone has 12 tackles and 0.5 sacks. He however does much more for the Sooners defense than what shows up on the stat sheet. He is a big body that Georgia’s offensive line would have an extremely difficult time blocking especially in the run game, but they may not have to worry about him anymore.
If Stone is out then Georgia’s offense should be able to find more success across the board. This should help the run game more since stopping the run is where Stone thrives, but Gunner Stockton should have more time in the passing game if he’s unavailable on Saturday as well.
Stone hasn’t been ruled out yet, but based on the available reports it seems unlikely that he’ll play. Oklahoma will have to update his status on Wednesday on the SEC’s first mandated injury report.
There’s a chance that David Stone’s injury could’ve been avoided
No official reports detailing what happened have been published since news of this injury, but rumors are circulating that make it seem like it could’ve easily been avoided. Again, these are just rumors up to this point, but Oklahoma apparently had Stone lined up at fullback working on goal line packages when he suffered this injury.
This isn’t the first time that a big defensive lineman would’ve lined up on offense. A few times every year a player goes viral online when a big defensive or offensive lineman has their number called and barrels over defenders running the ball. It’s unclear if that’s how Oklahoma was thinking about using Stone, but he was rumored to be practicing at fullback when this injury occurred.
If this rumor is true then this injury could’ve easily been avoided. Every team tries to be creative to earn an advantage over their opponents, but having your star defender line up at fullback seems like a poor decision. It doesn’t seem worth it to risking injury to one of your best players just to block or carry the ball one time on offense. Oklahoma has to have a few other massive defenders lower on the depth chart than Stone, so maybe they should’ve had one of them practicing with the offense instead of him.
Georgia will be in a better position to beat Oklahoma on Saturday if the Sooners are without Stone, but no one should want to see anyone get injured. This injury however will completely change things for Georgia’s offense, and in this instance they should be better equipped to move the ball against what has been a stellar Oklahoma defense so far this year.
Georgia was already expected to win this game as they opened as two touchdown favorites, but an injury to Stone should give them an even better chance to win.
