ESPN dropped Georgia in their rankings even though they didn't play this weekend

ESPN has some explaining to do.

Georgia football was on a bye this week, but that didn't stop ESPN from dropping them in their Football Power Index (FPI) rankings. Heading into this week Georgia was No. 3 in their FPI rankings even after their loss to Auburn, but after this past weekend they fell to No. 4.

Miami previously was No. 4, but after their 52-23 win over Pittsburgh this weekend they jumped Georgia. The Hurricanes are undefeated and the No. 1 team in the AP Poll, so them being above Georgia isn't a problem. Ohio State and Notre Dame both being ranked higher than Georgia is a bit controversial though.

Ohio State and Notre Dame shouldn't be higher than Georgia

Ohio State only has one quality win just like Georgia. They beat a good Indiana team on the road while Georgia beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Those wins are essentially the same, but Georgia's only loss to Auburn at home is worse than Ohio State's only loss on the road to Texas.

Ohio State however has hit a major road bump as starting quarterback Julian Sayin is out for the foreseeable future. There's even a chance he misses the rest of the season as well. Ohio State deserves to be ranked higher than Georgia like they are in the AP Poll, but the FPI isn't a ranking, it's a power rating. This means that ESPN's FPI is predicting which teams they think would win on a neutral field, and it doesn't seem likely that OSU would beat Georgia without their starting quarterback right now.

Notre Dame also may not deserve to be above Georgia either. They're only loss to BYU isn't as bad as Georgia's loss to Auburn, but they don't have a marquee win like Georgia does when they beat Alabama. Notre Dame also hasn't beat any team with a pulse, so who knows why ESPN has them so high.

The AP Poll agrees with this thought process because they just moved Georgia past the Irish in their updated rankings on Sunday.

Georgia has a chance for multiple marquee victories

Georgia has a few opportunities headed their way to add some nice wins to their resume, and if they can win their next three games there's a chance they could be No. 1 in ESPN's rankings at some point.

Up next for Georgia is a rivalry game against Florida in Atlanta. The Gators are No. 17 in the lastest AP Poll, so this would be a great win for Georgia's resume. After playing Florida the Bulldogs travel to No. 12 Ole Miss before hosting No. 22 Missouri. These are two more chances to get some ranked wins which Georgia only has one of so far.

All Georgia needs to do is focus on winning. The only thing that matters is being ranked No. 1 at the end of the season instead of in the middle of it, and no matter what ESPN or the AP Poll says if Georgia wins the rest of their games they will finish as the No. 1 team in the country at the end of the year.
