ESPN gave Georgia the credit the AP Poll refused to give them

The Week 4 AP Poll kept Georgia at No. 2 behind the Texas Longhorns this week, but ESPN isn't so sure that is correct.

Georgia had a good argument to pass Texas since all four of their wins have been by at least 28 points, but that apparently wasn't enough for the AP Poll to move Georgia past Texas. ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) however feels differently because they just crowned Georgia their No. 1 team in the country.

Georgia's resume deemed good enough by ESPN

Georgia doesn't have a marquee victory like some other teams in the country, but what they do have is utter dominance. They began their season against Tennessee State and Western Kentucky who are two teams that should never be on the same field as Georgia, and the Bulldogs proved that to be true by winning by 60 and 50 points.

Then Georgia began their SEC schedule the following week where they won at Arkansas by 28 points. That was quickly followed up with another 28 point win against an Oklahoma team who was ranked inside the top 10 of the preseason AP Poll.

Texas is the only team ranked above Georgia right now in the AP Poll likely because of their ranked wins over Ohio State and Tennessee. It's hard for anyone to argue against that being the right decision, but Georgia has done about everything they can to build a strong resume with who they've played.

What Georgia can do to earn the AP Poll's No. 1 ranking

The AP Poll made it clear that Georgia needs to beat some ranked teams before they can pass Texas for the top spot. They won't get that chance this weekend against Vanderbilt, but after that they face a remarkably difficult four game stretch.

It begins on the road at No. 7 Alabama in Week 6. After that Georgia gets Auburn at home before a bye week and their neutral site showdown against No. 8 Florida in Week 9. If that stretch isn't hard enough they then end with a road game at No. 9 Ole Miss.

If Georgia can survive that stretch they could finally have a good enough argument for why they should be No. 1 instead of Texas, but the Longhorns may not be undefeated at that point in the season. After Texas' bye week this week they play Oklahoma and Florida. Then they have dates with Ole Miss, No. 16 Mississippi State, No. 25 Missouri and No. 11 LSU. It's hard to imagine Texas surviving that schedule without one loss, so they may end up handing Georgia the No. 1 ranking with a loss of their own.

It ultimately doesn't matter right now if Georgia is ranked No. 1 or not. The only time that actually matters is at the end of the season, but earning that ranking is a good goal to have especially with how great the start of the season has been.

Georgia can only take it one game at a time which means they have to beat Vanderbilt first, but once they get past them they will finally have a chance to start earning some marquee victories the AP voters will like.
