Oklahoma was supposed to be the Bulldogs first big game of the season, but the Week 3 AP Poll took away the opportunity for Georgia to earn their first ranked win of the season.
The Sooners began the season as the No. 10 team in the country, but after just three weeks and one loss Oklahoma is outside of the AP Poll. This means Georgia won't get a chance to earn a ranked win this weekend like they thought.
Oklahoma's downfall ruined Georgia's chance at a statement win
All it took was three games for Oklahoma to be knocked out of the AP Poll. Oklahoma won their season opener against UTEP 51-0, but after that they lost to Michigan 17-10 before barely surviving New Mexico's upset bid this past weekend 14-6. Even though Oklahoma won this week the AP Poll still kicked them out of the top 25.
Georgia held steady at No. 2 which is the only thing that truly matters, but it would've been nice to have a chance at a ranked win. Those are the victories Georgia needs to build their resume, and the Sooners were supposed to be one of their guaranteed chances at a ranked win. Oklahoma however hasn't looked like a top 25 team the last two weeks so it's hard to blame the AP Poll for knocking them out.
Oklahoma is still capable of beating Georgia regardless of if they are ranked or not, but the Bulldogs' potential win over the Sooners won't look as good on their resume since they aren't ranked.
Georgia's future opportunities at a ranked win
The good news for Georgia is that the SEC always provides a handful of opportunities at a few ranked wins each season. They unfortunately won't have a chance at one this week, but in two weeks they should get their first chance at Alabama who is the No. 8 team in the country this week.
After the Crimson Tide the Bulldogs have three other opponents who are currently ranked. This includes No. 21 Florida, No. 4 Ole Miss and No. 19 Missouri.
There is also a chance other teams move their way into the AP Poll before Georgia plays them, but at the same time these other teams could be unranked by the time they play too. At the end of the day all Georgia can do is keep on winning, and as long as they win then the number of ranked wins they have on their resume won't matter all that much.
