The latest edition of the College Football Playoff rankings is hard to understand. Georgia jumped to No. 10 on Tuesday after beating Tennessee this past weekend, but some of the teams in front of them don't make a lot of sense.
Teams like Indiana, Notre Dame, Texas, Miami (FL) and Penn State all have better records than Georgia, but their resumes do not compare to Georgias. But there's another part of the committee's rankings that doesn't make sense either, and not many people are talking about it.
Everyone gets credit for Georgia being good... except for Georgia
Georgia football is an objectively good team. Everyone in the country knows this after seeing them beat Texas, Clemson and Tennessee already this season. Well, everyone except for the CFP committee.
To be fair, the committee does say that they believe Georgia is a very good team, but their actions and rankings do not show that. Kirby Smart and Georgia have the No. 1 strength of schedule and resume in the country, yet the committee still puts them at No. 10 and barely inside the playoff picture. How is that even possible? Georgia clearly deserves more credit for being the great team that they are.
But as mentioned, the committee does not give them enough credit. But where this gets strange is how much credit the committee gives other teams for Georgia being good.
Ole Miss and Alabama are praised far more because they beat Georgia, even though they also have two losses. Texas also gets a ton of credit for their only loss coming to Georgia, even though they got blown out at home by the Bulldogs and do not have a quality win of their own yet this season.
Nobody is saying Ole Miss and Alabama's win against Georgia aren't great wins. Nobody is even saying that Texas' loss to Georgia is bad either. But if the committee is going to praise these teams because of their result against Georgia, then maybe, just maybe Georgia should receive more credit for being a good team.
